Mix Marshall Arts — The Way of Truth

A Path of Self-Discovery and Inner Truth

The Martial Artist's Path to Truth

by Marshall Epie

Living by the truth can be tricky. Not everyone you meet is ready to face it, and sometimes telling the truth can be more harmful than helpful. If someone has body odour or bad breath, for example, and you bluntly point it out — especially in public — they might feel humiliated. That embarrassment can quickly turn into anger or even violence.

The truth is, not everyone is ready to receive the truth. And if you live by honesty, you soon learn that truth must be delivered with wisdom, timing, and compassion.

This is where martial arts comes in.

With over 30 years of experience in martial arts since 1994, I've trained across several disciplines — starting with Kickboxing, then Shotokan Karate, Wing Chun Kung Fu, Kenpo Jiu-Jitsu, and Capoeira. Each art carries its own philosophy: the discipline of Karate, the adaptability of Wing Chun, the fluid motion of Capoeira, the precision of Kickboxing, and the strategic flow of Jiu-Jitsu.

But martial arts, at its core, is not about fighting. It's about awareness — of yourself, of others, and of your environment. It teaches you when to act, when to hold back, and how to channel force without cruelty. You learn that strength without control is chaos, and truth without compassion is destruction.

Over time, I've realised that telling the truth requires the same mindset as facing an opponent: you must be centred, calm, and respectful. You must judge the right moment to speak, the right tone to use, and the right energy to project.

The martial artist's path to truth is about balance — knowing when to stand firm and when to yield. It's about using truth not as a weapon, but as a form of healing.

That's what decades of martial training taught me:
the art of truth is the art of peace.
